Quick Answer
What does Stop On Response do?
Stop On Response halts the remaining automated messages in a campaign or workflow after a contact replies. This prevents additional follow-up from continuing after the contact has already engaged and allows a team member to take over the conversation.
What Stop On Response Does
Automated campaigns and workflows can continue sending messages until every scheduled step is complete.
That behavior can become a problem when a contact replies before the sequence ends. Without a stopping rule, the system may continue sending reminders, prompts, or sales messages even though a real conversation has already started.
Stop On Response prevents that by removing the contact from the remaining message sequence after a reply is detected.
The practical rule is simple:
If the contact replies, stop the automation and let a person continue the conversation.
Campaigns have been replaced by Workflows
The original Campaigns feature is deprecated. Stop On Response remains supported and is now available inside Workflow Settings.
Stop On Response at a Glance
Before You Begin
Decide whether a reply should stop the remaining automation before enabling the setting.
- Identify the workflow or legacy campaign you want to update.
- Confirm that the sequence sends messages contacts can reply to.
- Decide whether every reply should stop future follow-up.
- Identify which team member should continue the conversation.
- Review any later messages that would be skipped after a reply.
- Confirm that the Conversations area is being monitored.
- Prepare a test contact and test reply.
- Confirm the behavior separately for each communication channel.
Why Stop On Response Matters
Prevents Over-Messaging
Stops additional automated follow-up after the contact has already replied.
Keeps Conversations Relevant
Prevents messages written for an unresponsive lead from being sent after the lead becomes engaged.
Supports Human Follow-Up
Gives a team member room to respond without automated messages interrupting the conversation.
Reduces Confusion
Prevents a contact from receiving prompts that no longer match the current conversation.
Protects the Customer Experience
Helps the automation feel responsive rather than repetitive or disconnected.
Protects the Brand
Reduces the risk of automation continuing after a contact has already answered the question or accepted the next step.
Example Use Case
A lead enters a nurture sequence that asks them to book a call.
The workflow includes several reminder messages. Before the remaining reminders are sent, the lead replies:
“Yes, I’m interested—what’s next?”
With Stop On Response enabled, the remaining automated reminders stop. A team member can then respond directly and continue the conversation.
Without the setting, the lead might continue receiving messages asking them to reply or book a call even though they have already done so.

Review Reply Behavior by Channel
Stop On Response is commonly used to stop outgoing messages after a contact replies.
The original guide specifically recommends testing the exact reply behavior for the channels used in your setup.
SMS Replies
Test a direct SMS reply and confirm that the remaining automated messages stop.
Email Replies
Test an email reply and confirm whether it triggers the same stopping behavior in your configuration.
Other Messaging Channels
Test each connected channel separately rather than assuming all replies are detected in exactly the same way.
Test the actual workflow path
Use the same sender, contact method, workflow steps, and reply channel that real contacts will use.
Test Stop On Response
Complete a controlled test before using the setting with active leads.
Create a Test Contact
Use contact information you control and can easily identify.
Add the Contact to the Sequence
Enter the contact into the workflow or legacy campaign.
Confirm the First Message
Verify that the initial automated message is delivered.
Reply as the Contact
Send a reply through the channel you are testing.
Review the Conversation
