Card Authorization for Subscription and Payment Plans

Verify funds before access is granted. Card Authorization helps protect subscriptions, free trials, and installment plans by confirming the customer’s card can cover the intended amount.

Verifying Payments Before Granting Access

You may be offering subscriptions, trials, or payment plans, but not every payment method will successfully process when it’s time to bill.

Card authorization allows you to verify that a customer’s card can cover the intended charge before access is granted.

Without this step, you may grant access to users whose payments later fail.

This guide will show you how to use card authorization so you can reduce failed payments and protect your offers.

Once you understand how authorization works, follow the steps below to configure your products, set authorization amounts, and apply this feature inside your BizStackPro funnels and websites.

How Card Authorization Works

Card Authorization runs a temporary funds check on the customer’s card. It verifies the card can cover the amount you set, but it does not collect the payment until the real billing date.

  • Free trials: If a trial converts into a charge later, authorization helps confirm the customer can pay when the trial ends.
  • Payment plans: If you split a purchase into installments, authorization can verify funds up front (based on your configuration).
  • Protection: Reduce access granted to cards that can’t support the billing amount.

Follow along: Use Card Authorization when you’re selling a recurring product (subscription, trial → paid, or payment plan) and you want a quick funds verification before the customer receives access.

Note: You may see the authorization in your payment provider (like Stripe) as a temporary hold. It is not the actual charge.

Set a Custom Card Authorization Amount

You can set a custom authorization amount per product. This amount must be greater than 0 and typically applies to products with a recurring price type.

  1. Go to Sites → choose Funnels or Websites.
  2. Open the funnel step or website page where the product is sold.
  3. Open the Products tab.
  4. Click Edit on an existing product (or click + Add Product).
  5. Find Additional Options, then locate the Custom Authorization field.
  6. Enter the authorization amount (must be greater than 0).
  7. Click Save to apply changes.

Pro tip: If you use a trial, add a short note near your checkout like: “Your card may be temporarily authorized to verify funds. You won’t be charged until your billing date.”

Note: Authorization holds often release quickly, but exact timing depends on the payment provider and bank.

When to Use Card Authorization

  • Subscriptions: Confirm the card can support recurring billing before access starts.
  • Free trials: Reduce “trial abuse” and improve trial-to-paid conversion quality.
  • Installment plans: Add extra protection before delivering access or fulfillment.
  • High-value offers: Use it for products where failed payments create real operational friction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Card Authorization the same as charging my customer?

No. It’s a temporary funds check (a hold) and not the actual charge. The real payment happens on the billing date.

Do I need to set up Card Authorization for all my products?

No. It’s optional and typically used for recurring products, trials, and payment plans where you want to verify funds before granting access.

How long does it take for the authorization charge to be refunded?

It’s usually released quickly because it’s temporary, but timing can vary by payment provider and bank. Check your payment processor for exact details.

Reduce Payment Friction Before It Starts

Card Authorization can help you verify funds early, reduce failed billing events, and keep your subscription or payment plan customers on track from day one.
