Adding Discounts Without Breaking Your Checkout Flow

When offering promotions, it’s not always clear how to apply discounts without changing your pricing structure or creating separate offers.

Coupons allow you to apply percentage or fixed discounts at checkout, giving you flexibility to run promotions while keeping your core offer unchanged.

Without a clear setup, coupons may not appear at checkout, apply incorrectly, or create confusion about when and how they can be used.

This guide will walk you through how to enable coupons, create discount codes, and control how they’re applied during checkout.

Before creating a coupon, it’s important to understand the basic requirements and limitations.

Before You Start

Coupons help you add flexible discounts at checkout, but they have a few important rules.

  • Version 2 Offers only: Coupons work with Version 2 Offers.
  • No Free Offers: Coupons are not available for Free Offers.
  • Managed in Payments: Coupons are created and managed under Payments → Coupons.

Pro tip: If you don’t see coupon options, check Settings → Labs and enable Membership Coupons.

Enable Coupons on a Membership Offer

You must enable coupons at the offer level so the checkout page shows a coupon field.

Follow along: Go to MembershipsCoursesOffers → edit your offer → under Price toggle Allow checkouts to access couponsSave.

After saving, preview the offer/checkout and confirm you see the coupon input (example label: “Enter your coupon code”).

Create a New Coupon

Coupons are created in Payments. You’ll define the code, discount type, and optional restrictions.

Follow along: Go to PaymentsCouponsCreate Coupon.

  1. Label: Internal name (easy to recognize later).
  2. Code: What customers type (example: SUMMER20).
  3. Discount type: Percentage or Fixed amount.
  4. Start date: When the coupon becomes valid.
  5. Optional: End date, total redemption limit, one-per-customer, and any product/offer restrictions.

How Members Redeem a Coupon

When coupons are enabled for the offer, customers can apply their code during checkout.

  1. Open the checkout page for the offer.
  2. Enter the code in the coupon field.
  3. Click Apply.
  4. Confirm the discount is deducted from the total before completing payment.

Quick check: Test the coupon yourself before promoting it (especially if you set restrictions or an end date).

Why This Matters

  • Higher conversions: Discounts can reduce hesitation at checkout.
  • Cleaner promos: Coupons are easier to track than manual price changes.
  • Better control: Limits and end dates help prevent overuse.
  • Easy testing: You can validate the checkout flow before launching a campaign.
